In March 2021, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was appointed as a commissioner for the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder, a six-month initiative focused on examining misinformation and disinformation in the United States. The commission brought together 15 members from media, technology, policy, and civil society to study the spread of false information and propose recommendations to address its impact. The commission was co-chaired by journalist Katie Couric, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson, and former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) director Chris Krebs. Its work aimed to analyze the structural causes of misinformation, including digital platform dynamics, and to develop practical strategies for reducing harm while supporting democratic processes and public trust. Prince Harry’s participation reflected his public stance on the effects of online misinformation. In statements released at the time, he described misinformation as a “humanitarian issue,” emphasizing its influence on public understanding and decision-making. His involvement was also linked to his personal experiences with media coverage and his broader advocacy for improving the digital information environment. The appointment was announced shortly after 23/03/2021, when Prince Harry took on the role of Chief Impact Officer at BetterUp, a Silicon Valley-based mental health and coaching company. Together, these developments marked a period of increased engagement in structured initiatives addressing mental health, media accountability, and information integrity following his departure from senior royal duties in 2020.
