On 23/09/2019, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, to begin a 10-day official tour of Southern Africa. The visit marked their first overseas tour as a family with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who was four months old at the time. The family traveled on a commercial British Airways flight, and although Archie did not attend the first day’s engagements, he was photographed upon arrival. The couple’s first official engagement took place in Nyanga township, where they visited a workshop run by The Justice Desk, an organization focused on human rights education and self-defense training for young girls. During the visit, Meghan Markle delivered remarks that were widely reported, stating she was present “as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of colour and as your sister.” Later that day, the Duke and Duchess visited the District Six Museum, where they learned about the forced removals of approximately 60,000 residents during the apartheid era. The tour continued in Cape Town over the following days, including a visit on 24/09/2019 to Waves for Change, an initiative supporting youth mental health, and participation in Heritage Day activities in the Bo-Kaap area. On 25/09/2019, the couple met Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter Thandeka, during which Archie made his first official public appearance. From 26/09/2019 to 01/10/2019, Prince Harry undertook solo visits to Botswana, Angola, and Malawi, focusing on conservation work, youth programs through Sentebale, and landmine clearance efforts, including retracing Princess Diana’s 1997 walk through a cleared minefield in Angola. Meghan Markle remained in South Africa for part of this period before the couple reunited in Johannesburg on 01/10/2019 for final engagements. These included meetings with Graça Machel and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa before concluding the tour on 02/10/2019. The tour addressed themes such as community development, mental health, environmental conservation, and historical awareness, forming part of the couple’s official international engagements during their time as senior working members of the royal family.
