In June 2023, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, became the first senior British royal in more than 130 years to give evidence in a court of law, marking a rare moment involving the British monarchy and the UK legal system. The hearing took place at the High Court in London as part of his legal action against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), which he accused of unlawful information gathering, including phone hacking and other privacy breaches.
Prince Harry appeared in court on 06/06/2023 and 07/06/2023, where he gave evidence under oath, answering questions from both his own legal team and the defense. His testimony focused on allegations that journalists working for MGN had obtained private information about him between the late 1990s and early 2010s. He described how media intrusion affected his personal life and relationships, and referenced specific articles he claimed were based on unlawfully obtained information. The case was one of several legal actions he has pursued against British media organizations concerning privacy and press conduct.
During the proceedings, the court examined numerous articles published by MGN titles such as the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and The People. Prince Harry stated that the coverage had contributed to mistrust and distress over many years. MGN denied unlawful activity in most instances, though it acknowledged some historical wrongdoing. The case formed part of a broader legal and public examination of media practices in the UK, particularly those involving public figures.
On 15/12/2023, the High Court ruled partially in Prince Harry’s favor. Mr Justice Timothy Fancourt found that phone hacking had occurred in some instances and awarded Prince Harry £140,600 in damages. The judgment confirmed that unlawful information gathering had been carried out by journalists at MGN during certain periods.
