As World War I unfolded, Australia took strategic actions in the Pacific region. One such critical military operation was the seizing of German New Guinea, which marked the end of German control over the territory. Before the conflict, the Imperial German government had established substantial administrative and economic infrastructure in German New Guinea, using it as a colonial outpost in the Pacific. The colony was significant for both its natural resources and its strategic location.
In response to the war, the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) was quickly assembled to capture and secure German possessions in the region. The force, comprising approximately 1,500 soldiers and sailors, departed Sydney and landed in Rabaul, the administrative center of German New Guinea. After landing, the ANMEF faced light resistance from the German colonial forces. Despite initial skirmishes, the majority of the German troops were outmatched in manpower and resources, leading to a rapid Australian advance.
The German administration formally surrendered, and Australia established military rule over the captured territory. The annexation of German New Guinea had broader implications for the region. It extended Australia's influence in the Pacific and deprived Germany of a crucial stronghold in the area. In a broader context, the move also highlighted the role of colonies in global conflicts and shifted local power structures significantly.
In the subsequent peace treaties following the conclusion of World War I, the League of Nations mandated the territory to Australia, solidifying its control. This shift marked the beginning of a new administrative period that influenced the socio-political landscape of Papua New Guinea.
