The Canal Zone, a region under U.S. control since the early 20th century, became a focal point of conflict between Panama and the United States. Tensions escalated significantly during the 1960s as the Panamanian military began to assert its influence against the established oligarchy. The Martyrs' Day riots marked a critical point in this struggle, reflecting deep-seated grievances regarding U.S. occupation and control over the Canal Zone. The riots were triggered by a series of events that highlighted the growing discontent among Panamanians, culminating in violent confrontations. During these riots, twenty Panamanian rioters lost their lives, and approximately 500 others sustained injuries. The violence also resulted in the deaths of four U.S. soldiers, further complicating the already strained relations between the two nations.
