On January 29, 2024, during the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, five-year-old Hind Rajab and her family were attempting to flee the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in Gaza City. Their vehicle, a black Kia, was struck by an Israeli tank shell, resulting in the immediate deaths of Rajab's aunt, uncle, and four cousins. Hind and her 15-year-old cousin, Layan Hamadeh, survived the initial attack and managed to contact the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) for assistance. Tragically, while still on the call, Hamadeh was fatally shot as the tank continued to fire upon their vehicle. Hind remained trapped and injured, pleading for help over the phone for several hours. Despite coordination efforts, the PRCS ambulance dispatched for rescue was also attacked, leading to the deaths of two paramedics. The bodies of Hind, her family members, and the paramedics were discovered 12 days later, following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area.
This incident drew widespread international condemnation. Independent experts from the United Nations Human Rights Council suggested that the deliberate targeting of civilians and medical personnel could constitute a war crime. Investigations by organizations such as Forensic Architecture provided evidence indicating that Israeli tanks were present in the vicinity and likely responsible for the attacks on both the family's vehicle and the ambulance. In response to this and similar incidents, the Hind Rajab Foundation was established in Belgium to pursue legal action against individuals involved in alleged war crimes in Gaza, aiming to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future atrocities.
