On July 31, 2024, Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran, Iran. Haniyeh was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The attack occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time in his accommodation at a military-run guesthouse. Reports on the method of assassination vary: some sources suggest a remotely detonated explosive device was planted in his room months prior, while others indicate a short-range projectile was launched from outside the building. Haniyeh's personal bodyguard, Wasim Abu Shaaban, was also killed in the attack.
The assassination led to widespread condemnation from Iran and Hamas, both attributing the attack to Israel. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, led funeral prayers for Haniyeh in Tehran, emphasizing the deep ties between Iran and Hamas. Haniyeh's death marked a significant escalation in the Israel–Hamas conflict, intensifying regional tensions and raising concerns about potential retaliatory actions.
