On July 9, 2024, the Gaza Strip experienced a series of devastating attacks resulting in significant civilian casualties. In Gaza City, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted operations in the neighborhoods of Tel al-Hawa, Sabra, and Shuja'iyya. These assaults led to the deaths of at least 50 Palestinians and left dozens more injured. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that these attacks were part of a broader escalation in the region, contributing to a rising death toll among the Palestinian population.
On the same day, the IDF targeted the Al-Awda School in Abasan al-Kabira, near Khan Younis. This United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)-run school had been serving as a shelter for displaced individuals fleeing ongoing hostilities. The airstrike resulted in the deaths of at least 31 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, and injured over 53 others. This incident marked the fourth attack on Gaza schools within a span of four days, raising serious concerns about the safety of civilians seeking refuge in designated shelters.
