On 22/02/2026, Kim Jong Un was unanimously re-elected as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea on the fourth day of the party’s 9th National Congress in Pyongyang. The week-long congress, held from 19/02/2026 to 25/02/2026 at the April 25 House of Culture, brought together approximately 5,000 delegates from across the country. State media described Kim’s re-election as reflecting the “unanimous desire” of the party and the military, reinforcing his continued leadership over both the party apparatus and the armed forces.
The 9th National Congress served as a central platform for outlining North Korea’s strategic objectives for the next five years. A notable outcome was a generational shift within the party leadership structure. More than half of the Central Committee members were reportedly replaced, with younger technocrats and loyalists assuming key roles. This restructuring followed earlier party reorganizations and was presented domestically as part of efforts to strengthen administrative efficiency and policy implementation.
Military and nuclear policy featured prominently during the congress. Kim reaffirmed that the country’s nuclear status is “irreversible” and described nuclear forces as the “pivot” of national defense. In the days leading up to the congress, North Korea displayed 50 nuclear-capable rocket launchers, a move widely interpreted as a symbolic demonstration of military capacity. The emphasis on nuclear deterrence aligned with previous policy declarations that prioritize strategic weapons development amid ongoing international sanctions.
Economic issues were also addressed. Kim acknowledged past economic challenges and set new objectives centered on self-reliance and improvements in living standards. Priority sectors identified included shipbuilding and coal production, industries long viewed by Pyongyang as critical to domestic stability and export potential. The congress took place against the backdrop of continued international sanctions, which have affected trade, energy supplies, and industrial development.
Questions about succession surfaced around the event. Although no formal designation occurred during the congress, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service reported by February 2026 that Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, had completed successor training. She appeared publicly alongside her father during a military parade marking the conclusion of the congress on 25/02/2026 at Kim Il Sung Square. Her presence at official state events has drawn attention since her first public appearances in late 2022.
The congress concluded with a large-scale military parade in central Pyongyang, showcasing conventional and strategic weaponry. The event underscored the leadership’s continued focus on military modernization while outlining domestic economic goals for the coming five-year period.
