On 01/09/2024, Nestlé S.A. officially appointed Laurent Freixe as its Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Mark Schneider, who stepped down after serving as CEO of the company for eight years. The leadership transition marked a major executive change at the world’s largest food and beverage company, whose portfolio includes brands across coffee, dairy, confectionery, pet care, bottled water, and nutrition products.
Nestlé announced the succession in August 2024, confirming that Freixe would assume the role effective from 01/09/2024. Mark Schneider had led the Swiss multinational since 2017 and became the first external CEO appointed by Nestlé in nearly a century. During his tenure, the company expanded its focus on health, nutrition, coffee, and pet care while also restructuring parts of its business portfolio. Schneider’s period as CEO included major acquisitions, portfolio optimization efforts, and navigating global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, inflationary pressures, and changing consumer spending patterns.
Laurent Freixe brought more than three decades of Nestlé experience into the role. Born in France, he joined Nestlé in 1986 and held several senior leadership positions across Europe, Latin America, and global operations. Before becoming CEO, Freixe served as Executive Vice President and CEO of Nestlé Zone Latin America, overseeing operations across multiple regional markets. His long internal career made him one of the company’s most experienced operational executives.
Nestlé Chairman Paul Bulcke described Freixe as a leader with deep market knowledge and operational expertise. The company stated that the transition was intended to support long-term continuity while adapting to changing market conditions and consumer expectations. Investors and analysts closely followed the leadership change as Nestlé continued addressing slower consumer demand growth in some markets and increased competition in several product categories.
Why This Moment Matters
Laurent Freixe’s appointment represented a return to internally developed leadership after Nestlé’s eight-year period under an external chief executive. The transition also came during a period when global consumer goods companies were balancing cost pressures, supply chain adjustments, and evolving consumer demand patterns across both developed and emerging markets.
