In December 2014, Nestlé Skin Health announced the creation of a global network of skin care innovation hubs under a program called SHIELD, short for Skin Health Investigation, Education and Longevity Development. The initiative formed part of Nestlé’s broader healthcare and dermatology expansion strategy and was designed to address increasing global demand for skin health solutions associated with aging populations and chronic dermatological conditions.
Nestlé stated that the SHIELD program would establish 10 international innovation hubs where dermatologists, physicians, researchers, and technology specialists could collaborate on the development of new approaches to skin care, disease prevention, diagnostics, and long-term skin health management. The company positioned the centers as multidisciplinary environments intended to combine medical science, digital health technologies, education, and consumer research within a coordinated global framework.
At the time of the announcement, Nestlé Skin Health allocated approximately $350 million toward dermatology-related research and development activities for the year. The investment reflected the company’s increasing focus on healthcare-oriented business segments beyond its traditional food and beverage operations. Nestlé Skin Health had already expanded significantly through previous acquisitions and investments involving dermatology products, prescription skin treatments, and medical skin care technologies.
The first SHIELD innovation hub was scheduled to open in New York during mid-2015, with additional planned locations including Hong Kong and São Paulo. Nestlé indicated that the hubs would be strategically located in major urban centers to support collaboration with healthcare institutions, academic researchers, medical professionals, and regional health systems. The initiative was launched in partnership with the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA), an international organization focused on aging-related public policy and health challenges.
Nestlé executives stated that the SHIELD initiative aimed to support research into age-related skin conditions, preventative care, and technologies that could improve long-term skin health outcomes. During the 2010s, the global skin care and dermatology market experienced strong growth driven by aging populations, rising healthcare spending, increased consumer interest in wellness, and expanding demand for both medical and cosmetic skin treatments.
The announcement also reflected Nestlé’s broader strategic efforts during that period to diversify into nutrition, health science, and medical-oriented consumer sectors. Through Nestlé Skin Health and other healthcare-related divisions, the company increasingly positioned itself at the intersection of consumer products, wellness, and clinical care.
Why This Moment Matters:
The SHIELD initiative demonstrated Nestlé’s growing ambitions beyond traditional packaged foods and beverages during the 2010s. By investing heavily in dermatology research, aging-related healthcare, and collaborative medical innovation, Nestlé signaled its intention to expand into science-driven health sectors with long-term global growth potential.
