On 07/01/2009, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer delivered the opening keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and officially announced the Windows 7 Beta. The preview release, build 7000, was presented as a response to performance and compatibility concerns associated with Windows Vista. During the keynote, Ballmer described Windows 7 as a faster and more reliable operating system designed to simplify everyday computing.
Microsoft made the beta available the same evening to MSDN, TechBeta, and TechNet subscribers, with a broader public download scheduled for 09/01/2009. The public release was initially limited to 2.5 million downloads. Demonstrations at the keynote highlighted a redesigned taskbar with jump lists and thumbnail previews for improved navigation, as well as HomeGroup, a feature designed to simplify sharing files and printers across home networks. Microsoft also showcased expanded touch support, including native multi-touch gestures intended for touchscreen-enabled devices.
The CES 2009 announcement marked the first widely available preview of Windows 7 and outlined Microsoft’s focus on performance, usability, and hardware compatibility. The beta release allowed developers and users to test new features ahead of the operating system’s later commercial launch in October 2009.
