On 21/07/1998, Microsoft co-founder and CEO Bill Gates appointed Steve Ballmer as President of Microsoft, establishing him as the company’s second-in-command. The move formalized Ballmer’s leadership role and expanded his responsibility over day-to-day operations, including sales, marketing, and business strategy. Gates remained Chief Executive Officer and focused more on technology direction and long-term product development. Ballmer had joined Microsoft in 1980 and held several executive roles before the appointment, including leadership of sales and support operations. As president, he oversaw Microsoft’s business divisions and corporate management while Gates concentrated on software architecture and innovation. The July 1998 leadership change was part of Microsoft’s organizational restructuring aimed at managing the company’s continued growth. The appointment positioned Ballmer as Gates’ successor, a transition that eventually occurred in January 2000 when Ballmer became CEO. The 1998 decision marked a significant shift in Microsoft’s executive leadership structure.
