On 19/11/1996, Microsoft released Microsoft Office 97 to manufacturing, marking a major update to its productivity suite. The release included updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with improvements to integration and automation across applications. Microsoft positioned Office 97 as a platform for document creation, communication, and collaboration in both business and home environments.
Office 97 introduced several notable features, including the Office Assistant, an animated help system designed to guide users through tasks. The suite also added Visual Basic for Applications, enabling automation and macro development across Office programs. Outlook 97 replaced Microsoft Exchange Client and Schedule+ by combining email, calendar, and contact management into a single application. Additional improvements included enhanced spell checking, grammar tools, and tighter integration between Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The November 1996 release expanded Microsoft’s productivity software ecosystem and established features that remained part of Office for years. Office 97 was distributed to hardware manufacturers and corporate customers following the release-to-manufacturing milestone before broader availability.
