In 12/2018, Microsoft announced the open-source release of Project Mu, the company’s core Unified Extensible Firmware Interface code used in Surface devices and Hyper-V environments. Project Mu was built as a modular firmware platform based on the open-source TianoCore EDK II project, with Microsoft adding components for security, device management, and enterprise deployment. By releasing the code publicly, Microsoft aimed to enable hardware partners and developers to adopt and extend the same firmware architecture. Project Mu included features designed for modern device management, such as secure boot enhancements, update mechanisms, and improved configuration capabilities. Microsoft said the modular design allowed manufacturers to reuse components across different devices while maintaining consistent firmware behavior. The release also supported faster firmware updates and easier integration with Windows security technologies. The December 2018 announcement made Project Mu available on GitHub, allowing partners to contribute improvements and adapt the platform for custom hardware. Microsoft stated that the move would promote collaboration around UEFI firmware development and help standardize capabilities across Surface devices, virtualized environments, and partner hardware.
