On 10/11/2020, Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles worldwide, marking the company’s next generation of Xbox hardware. The release introduced two models simultaneously, with the Xbox Series X positioned as the flagship console and the Xbox Series S offered as a lower-cost digital-only alternative. The launch occurred across major markets including North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia. The Xbox Series X featured a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 graphics architecture, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and support for up to 4K gaming at high frame rates. The Xbox Series S targeted 1440p resolution with similar next-generation architecture but reduced GPU power and no optical drive. Both consoles included NVMe solid-state drives designed to significantly reduce load times and enable features such as Quick Resume, allowing users to switch between multiple games. Microsoft also introduced Smart Delivery, enabling players to receive optimized versions of games across console generations without additional purchases. The launch coincided with Microsoft’s continued emphasis on Xbox Game Pass, with first-party titles and third-party games available through the subscription service. Backward compatibility with thousands of Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles was also supported, with some games receiving performance and visual enhancements. Initial demand exceeded supply in several regions, with preorders selling out shortly after opening in September 2020.
