In July 1987, Microsoft completed its first major software acquisition by purchasing Forethought Inc., a Silicon Valley software company best known for developing PowerPoint. The deal was announced on 30/07/1987 and brought the newly released presentation software into Microsoft’s growing applications portfolio. Forethought had introduced PowerPoint 1.0 earlier in April 1987 for the Apple Macintosh, where it enabled users to create slide presentations with text and graphics intended for overhead transparencies and on-screen display. The acquisition allowed Microsoft to expand beyond programming languages and operating systems into productivity applications. After the purchase, Microsoft established a Graphics Business Unit in Silicon Valley to continue development of the software. The product was renamed Microsoft PowerPoint and later adapted for Windows, becoming part of Microsoft’s broader productivity suite strategy. This move complemented Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, which were already gaining adoption on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Following the acquisition, Microsoft released PowerPoint for Windows in 1990, aligning the application with Windows 3.0 and helping promote graphical presentation software in business environments. Over time, PowerPoint became a core component of Microsoft Office, which launched in 1989 for Macintosh and later for Windows in 1990, integrating Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into a single productivity package.
