On 26/10/2012, Microsoft officially launched Windows 8 alongside the Surface RT tablet, marking the company’s first release of in-house PC hardware paired with a major redesign of its operating system. Windows 8 introduced a tile-based interface designed for touchscreens, replacing the traditional Start menu with a full-screen Start screen. The release represented a shift toward supporting tablets and hybrid devices in addition to traditional desktop computers.
Windows 8 became generally available the same day in more than 140 markets and 37 languages. Microsoft held launch events including a midnight release in New York City. The operating system introduced the “Metro” style interface, later referred to as Modern UI, featuring live tiles, full-screen apps, and touch-focused navigation. The redesign removed the traditional Start button for the first time, reflecting Microsoft’s emphasis on touch-enabled computing and unified experiences across device types.
Microsoft also debuted the Surface RT, the first consumer tablet designed and manufactured by the company. The device ran Windows RT, an ARM-based version of Windows 8 optimized for battery efficiency and mobile hardware. Surface RT included a 10.6-inch display, integrated kickstand, and optional Touch Cover and Type Cover keyboards. The simultaneous launch of Windows 8 and Surface RT marked Microsoft’s entry into first-party PC hardware alongside a redesigned operating system.
