In 1973, Maya Angelou married Paul du Feu, a Welsh carpenter, writer, and cartoonist. The marriage took place during a period when Angelou was expanding her work across literature, theater, and public speaking. Du Feu, who had previously been married to feminist writer Germaine Greer, became Angelou’s second husband, and the couple spent time living in both the United States and Europe during their relationship. The marriage coincided with a productive period in Angelou’s career. During the 1970s, she continued publishing autobiographical works, poetry, and essays, while also appearing in stage productions and television projects. Her second autobiography, Gather Together in My Name (1974), and later works emerged during the years surrounding her relationship with du Feu. The period also included her Broadway performance in Look Away and ongoing lecture engagements. Angelou and du Feu remained married for roughly a decade before separating in the early 1980s. Their relationship overlapped with a time of sustained literary output and professional visibility. Following their separation, Angelou relocated to North Carolina, where she later accepted her appointment at Wake Forest University.
