In 1954, Maya Angelou joined a U.S. State Department sponsored touring production of the opera Porgy and Bess, marking a major transition from local nightclub performer to international stage artist. The tour featured a traveling company that performed selections from George Gershwin’s opera for audiences abroad. Angelou participated as a singer and dancer, gaining professional experience while traveling extensively outside the United States for the first time.
The tour took Angelou across 22 countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Among the nations visited were Italy, France, Greece, Yugoslavia, and Egypt. The extended travel exposed her to diverse cultures and political environments during the early Cold War period, when the U.S. government supported cultural diplomacy through international arts tours. The experience broadened her perspective and influenced her later writing about identity, travel, and global connections.
Angelou later described this period in her autobiography Singin’ and Swingin’ and Gettin’ Merry Like Christmas (1976), where she recounted the challenges and opportunities of touring abroad while balancing her responsibilities as a young mother. The 1954 tour became one of the earliest international chapters of her life and contributed to her development as a performer and writer.
