On 07/06/2014, a private memorial service for Dr. Maya Angelou was held at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. The ceremony began at 10 a.m. and was reserved for family members, invited friends, and selected guests. Although Wait Chapel seats more than 2,000 people, organizers limited attendance because of demand and space constraints. Wake Forest University provided a live stream of the ceremony, allowing the public to watch remotely while maintaining the private nature of the in person gathering.
The service included tributes from several prominent figures connected to Angelou’s life and work. First Lady Michelle Obama described Angelou as one of her “she roes” and spoke about the influence of her writing and public voice. Former President Bill Clinton reflected on Angelou’s “belief in dignity, love and kindness,” recalling her role in public life and national conversations about equality. Oprah Winfrey, a longtime friend of Angelou, delivered an emotional tribute and became visibly moved during her remarks. The ceremony also featured readings, music, and reflections from additional speakers connected to Wake Forest University and Angelou’s family.
Wake Forest University was selected for the memorial because Angelou served there for more than three decades as the Reynolds Professor of American Studies. She joined the faculty in 1982 and remained an influential presence on campus through lectures, mentoring, and public events. Her long association with the university shaped the decision to hold the principal memorial there, following her death on 28/05/2014 at age 86.
In lieu of flowers, Angelou’s family requested that memorial contributions be directed to the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at Wake Forest School of Medicine. The center focuses on addressing health disparities and community based research, reflecting Angelou’s interest in social equity and community wellbeing. The private service at Wait Chapel formed the first major memorial event honoring her life, followed by additional public tributes in the weeks that followed.
