On 14/12/2010, Maya Angelou released her second cookbook, Great Food, All Day Long: Cook Splendidly, Eat Smart, expanding her work beyond poetry and memoir into the realm of culinary writing. The book followed her earlier cookbook Hallelujah! The Welcome Table (2004) and reflected her personal approach to food, cooking, and wellbeing. Published in the United States, the release added another dimension to Angelou’s long and varied literary career.
In Great Food, All Day Long, Angelou presented recipes alongside reflections on health and lifestyle, promoting a philosophy centered on enjoyment of food while maintaining balance. Rather than advocating restrictive dieting, the book emphasized preparing flavorful meals, using fresh ingredients, and practicing portion control. Angelou framed cooking as both a creative and communal activity, drawing from her personal experiences in the kitchen and her appreciation for diverse cuisines.
The cookbook also addressed Angelou’s own efforts to maintain health later in life, including adjustments to eating habits. Recipes in the book were designed to be accessible and adaptable, with a focus on meals that could be enjoyed throughout the day. The structure combined practical guidance with narrative elements, continuing Angelou’s tradition of blending storytelling with instruction.
This publication came just two months before she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on 15/02/2011, further illustrating her continued public presence and productivity in her early 80s.
