Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was recognized in Time’s list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. Elected to the highest office in 1979, she served three consecutive terms until 1990. Thatcher is widely known for her role in the Cold War, her policies which came to be known as Thatcherism, and her influence on the Conservative Party.
Thatcher's tenure was marked by significant economic reforms, privatization of state-owned industries, and reduction of the power of trade unions.
