The opening of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) marked a pivotal change in Malaysia's air travel industry, as it replaced the previously operational Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT). Positioned to handle the increasing passenger traffic and growing demand within the low-cost carrier market, klia2 was constructed adjacent to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), streamlining connections for passengers and enhancing operational efficiency.
Serving as a key hub for AirAsia, among other low-cost carriers, klia2 incorporated modern facilities and amenities that addressed both functional and passenger comfort requirements. The terminal was built on a substantial budget and occupies 257,000 square meters, with a capacity to serve 45 million passengers annually, a significant upgrade from LCCT’s capacity of 15 million passengers. The terminal features 68 departure gates, 80 aerobridges, and numerous retail and dining options, creating a comprehensive travel experience for passengers.
The implementation of Automated People Mover systems and enhanced security checks was a strategic move to improve passenger flow and safety. Financial investments were substantial, reflecting the airport’s importance in augmenting Malaysia's transportation infrastructure and tourism industry. The operation of klia2 also created numerous employment opportunities and supported economic growth in the surrounding region.
Since its inception, klia2 has contributed significantly to Malaysia's burgeoning tourism sector, enabling smoother operations for low-cost carriers and providing passengers with enhanced travel experiences. The transport connectivity facilitated by klia2 encompasses both domestic and international routes, fostering greater regional interconnectedness.
