The Boeing Company was established on 15/07/1916 in Seattle, Washington, when American entrepreneur William E. Boeing incorporated an aircraft manufacturing business called Pacific Aero Products Company. The company was formed shortly after Boeing collaborated with U.S. Navy officer Conrad Westervelt to design and build a two seat seaplane known as the B&W seaplane, which became one of the first aircraft associated with the company. William E. Boeing, originally a lumber industry businessman, became interested in aviation during the early years of powered flight.
He established his aircraft workshop in a converted boat manufacturing facility near the Duwamish River in Seattle. On 15/07/1916, the enterprise was formally incorporated to manufacture airplanes. The following year, in 1917, the company’s name was changed from Pacific Aero Products Company to Boeing Airplane Company.
During its early period, Boeing produced aircraft primarily for military use. In the years around World War I, the company built training seaplanes and other aircraft models for the United States Navy. Over subsequent decades, Boeing expanded into commercial aviation, defense systems, and space technology. Today the company operates as a major aerospace manufacturer that designs and produces commercial airplanes, military aircraft, satellites, and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries.
As of recent estimates, Boeing employs over 170,000 people worldwide, with operations and suppliers located across multiple countries. The company remains one of the largest aerospace manufacturers and a major exporter from the United States.
