Between 2010 and 2012, Jerry Seinfeld broadened his production work through Columbus 81 Productions, the company associated with several of his television, comedy, film, and digital media projects. During this period, Seinfeld balanced network television ventures, Broadway productions, archival comedy releases, and emerging online programming formats as the entertainment industry increasingly shifted toward streaming and digital distribution.
One of the company’s highest-profile television projects during this period was NBC’s The Marriage Ref, which premiered in February 2010. Seinfeld created and executive produced the reality-comedy hybrid series, which featured celebrity panels humorously judging real-life marital disputes. Following the American version, a British adaptation titled The Marriage Ref aired on ITV in 2011. Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the UK version was produced with involvement from Seinfeld’s Columbus 81 Productions as the format expanded internationally.
At the same time, Seinfeld worked on theatrical comedy projects with longtime collaborator Colin Quinn. In 2011, Columbus 81 Productions was connected to Colin Quinn: Long Story Short, the one-man Broadway show directed by Seinfeld. The production condensed world history into a fast-paced comedic monologue and later became an HBO special. Seinfeld directed both the Broadway production and the filmed television adaptation, further expanding his work beyond stand-up performance and sitcom production.
The company also remained associated with Bee Movie, the animated DreamWorks film released in 2007. Although it preceded The Marriage Ref era by several years, the movie represented one of Columbus 81 Productions’ earliest large-scale entertainment ventures. Seinfeld co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film as the voice of Barry B. Benson. The project became notable for introducing Seinfeld into feature animation and family-oriented studio filmmaking in partnership with DreamWorks Animation.
During this period, Columbus 81 Productions also managed aspects of Seinfeld’s archival comedy material and digital media presence. Releases such as Lafflink Presents: The Platinum Comedy Series Vol. 1: Jerry Seinfeld in 2010 helped reintroduce audiences to early stand-up footage from Seinfeld’s pre-sitcom years. The growing availability of archival comedy content online and on DVD reflected changing audience demand for classic stand-up recordings and comedy history collections.
In 2012, shortly after NBC canceled The Marriage Ref, Seinfeld shifted toward internet-first entertainment with the launch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Produced under the Columbus 81 banner, the web series featured Seinfeld driving vintage cars with fellow comedians before sharing coffee and conversation. Initially released through Crackle, the series became one of the earliest successful celebrity-driven streaming talk formats and later moved to Netflix, where it reached a broader global audience.
