Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown while they were students at Stanford University. The application was initially released under the name “Picaboo” in July 2011 before being relaunched as Snapchat in September 2011. The company was headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The app allowed users to send photos that would automatically disappear after being viewed for a limited number of seconds. This temporary format distinguished Snapchat from other social media platforms that emphasized permanent posts and public profiles. Over time, the service expanded to include Stories (introduced in 2013), messaging, filters, and augmented reality lenses. Snapchat’s user base grew rapidly during the mid-2010s, particularly among younger demographics. In 2017, Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, went public on the New York Stock Exchange. The September 2011 launch introduced a model of ephemeral communication that influenced the development of similar features across other social media platforms in subsequent years. #Snapchat #SocialMediaHistory #EvanSpiegel #MobileApps #InternetHistory
