The Windward Islands Administration, responsible for overseeing the governance of several islands in the Caribbean, formally ended its operations. This administrative body had provided shared governance for Grenada, Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia, and Dominica. Upon the dissolution of this administrative structure, Grenada transitioned to become an integral member of the newly formed Federation of the West Indies.
The Federation of the West Indies emerged as a political entity aimed at establishing a collective form of governance among various Caribbean territories. Its primary objective was to foster a stronger regional identity and enhance cooperation on social, economic, and political fronts among the member islands. For Grenada, this shift marked a key change in its political alignment. With a population of around 89,000, Grenada brought its resources, both human and natural, to the Federation, contributing to a combined effort towards regional unity.
The creation of the Federation included territories such as Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and others from the Lesser Antilles. The Federation's initial challenges included addressing inter-island disparities and managing diverse local interests. Grenada's participation was seen as a step towards more cohesive and coordinated governance in the Caribbean. By joining the Federation, Grenada hoped to gain economic benefits, improved infrastructure, and increased political influence.
The wider implications of this administrative shift were debated extensively. There were high expectations for improved educational systems, healthcare, and transport networks. Nonetheless, tensions and differing ambitions among the islands posed significant challenges.
