In 1911, Second Lieutenant George S. Patton Jr. was completing his first military assignment with the 15th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Patton had joined the regiment on 12/09/1909 shortly after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Stationed along the shore of Lake Michigan north of Chicago, the 15th Cavalry conducted routine mounted training, drills, and field exercises, providing Patton with his first practical experience as a cavalry officer.
During his approximately two year posting at Fort Sheridan, Patton developed skills in horsemanship, saber use, and troop leadership. The assignment also introduced him to competitive athletics and fencing, which later became central to his military career. In late 1911, he received orders transferring him to Fort Myer, Virginia, where he joined the 3rd Cavalry Regiment. The move placed him near Washington, D.C., and positioned him for participation in the 1912 Olympic Games and subsequent cavalry training assignments.
