On 9 January 1984, our Low Wood Watersports Centre was officially opened by the Minister for Sport, Neil Macfarlane MP. The ceremony followed the creation of the centre in August 1983 and established a dedicated base for water-based activities on Windermere alongside Low Wood Hotel. The centre developed Low Wood’s long-standing connection with the lake by giving hotel guests and other visitors access to organised watersports from the shoreline. Over time, its activities expanded to include sailing and a range of other ways to get out on Windermere. The centre remains part of Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa today, providing equipment hire, instruction and watersports experiences. The official opening was an early step in broadening Low Wood’s leisure facilities during the 1980s, preceding the development of its Conference Centre and Leisure Club later in the decade.
