In 2023, we celebrated 70 years since the Berry family entered the hospitality business at Low Wood. The story began in spring 1953, when Low Wood welcomed its first guests under the family's stewardship, with Norman Buckley at the helm. The business subsequently developed into English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues and has remained family owned and run across five generations. englishlakes.co.uk
A highlight of the anniversary year was a two-day celebration at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa on 15 and 16 July 2023. Held beside Windermere, the weekend brought guests and friends of the hotel together for food, live music and entertainment. Saturday's programme included acoustic performers, a saxophonist, magic, spa experiences and an evening fireworks display, while Sunday was designed as a family day with children's activities and boat trips.
The anniversary also provided an opportunity to revisit the origins of the family business. Anne Cook, née Berry, shared her memories of preparing Low Wood for its reopening in 1953, when her family had taken over its management. Seventy years later, the anniversary celebrated that connection between the Berry family, Low Wood Bay and hospitality in the Lake District.
