In April 2004, we reopened the Waterhead Hotel at Ambleside following a major redevelopment programme costing more than £3 million. The hotel had closed in November 2003 to allow the work to take place. The project transformed Waterhead from a two-star hotel with 27 bedrooms into a contemporary four-star property with 41 bedrooms. The redevelopment introduced a substantially different style and standard of accommodation and positioned Waterhead as the Lake District's first four-star Town House Hotel. The investment represented a significant change for a property that had been part of English Lakes since 1975, increasing its capacity while repositioning it within the group's portfolio. The renewed Waterhead soon received recognition within the regional tourism industry. It subsequently received Cumbria Tourism's Small Hotel of the Year award, providing early recognition for the redeveloped property.
