On 12 July 1991, we opened Lancaster House Hotel in Lancaster. The development was a new departure for English Lakes: Lancaster House was our first hotel built on a greenfield site, rather than an existing hotel acquired and developed by the family. The project extended our operations beyond our established Lake District properties and was planned and built between 1989 and 1991. Douglas Dale played a leading role in its planning, design and construction, while Simon Berry, then Marketing Director, was also closely involved in developing the new hotel. Lancaster House opened with a strong emphasis on both accommodation and business hospitality, including conference facilities. Its opening established English Lakes in Lancaster and gave the group a purpose-built property from which to develop its conference and events business. The hotel was formally opened by Princess Alexandra later that year, on 4 December 1991.
