On 20 October 1965, we purchased the Royal Hotel, adding another property to the family hotel business that would later become English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues. The acquisition followed the purchase of Low Wood in 1958 and The Wild Boar in 1959 and formed part of the gradual expansion of our hotel interests during the 1960s. The Royal joined the business during Norman Buckley's leadership, at a time when the family was developing a small group of Lake District hotels. Four years after the acquisition, substantial extensions were also made to Low Wood and The Wild Boar, reflecting the continuing growth of the operation. The Royal remained part of the portfolio for several decades. English Lakes' historical record notes that, following its eventual sale, the hotel ceased trading in September 2004.
