In June 2005, Cristiano Ronaldo traveled to Aceh, Indonesia, as part of a humanitarian mission supporting victims of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The disaster, which struck on 26/12/2004, caused massive destruction across several countries and killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia alone, with Aceh among the hardest-hit regions.
Ronaldo’s visit was largely inspired by the widely publicized story of Martunis, a seven-year-old Indonesian boy who survived alone for 21 days after the tsunami. When rescuers found him, Martunis was wearing a Portugal national team jersey, an image that attracted international media attention and deeply moved Ronaldo and the Portuguese football community.
During his visit to Aceh, Ronaldo met Martunis personally and spent time with him and his family. The encounter became one of the most widely remembered humanitarian moments of Ronaldo’s early career. Ronaldo reportedly promised to support Martunis’s education and later invited him to Portugal, establishing a long-term relationship that many media outlets described as mentor-like. Over time, Martunis became popularly referred to as Ronaldo’s “adopted son,” although no formal adoption ever took place.
Ronaldo also visited several tsunami-affected sites across Aceh, including the historic Masjid Baiturrahim mosque in Ulee Lheue, one of the few major structures to survive the disaster relatively intact. His presence drew large crowds and extensive media coverage, helping raise international awareness about the ongoing reconstruction challenges faced by communities in the region.
Part of the purpose of the trip was to support fundraising and rehabilitation efforts focused on rebuilding schools, sports grounds, and community facilities destroyed by the tsunami. Ronaldo used his growing international profile to encourage continued humanitarian support months after the initial global emergency response had begun to fade from headlines.
During the visit, Ronaldo also met Indonesian officials, including Vice President Jusuf Kalla, to discuss relief and recovery programs underway in Aceh. The meetings reflected the significance of the reconstruction effort, which involved international governments, charities, NGOs, and public figures from around the world.
At the time of the trip, Ronaldo was still a young player at Manchester United and had not yet reached the peak of his football career. Nevertheless, the Aceh mission became one of the earliest major examples of his involvement in humanitarian work and international charity campaigns. It also contributed to his reputation as an athlete willing to use his global visibility for social causes beyond football.
The relationship between Ronaldo and Martunis continued for years after the visit. In later years, Martunis trained with Sporting CP’s youth academy in Portugal and remained publicly connected to Ronaldo through interviews and football events.
