On 29/03/2017, the airport on Cristiano Ronaldo’s home island of Madeira was officially renamed Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, known in Portuguese as Aeroporto Internacional da Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo. The ceremony took place in Santa Cruz, Madeira, and was attended by Ronaldo himself along with senior Portuguese political leaders, including President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister António Costa.
The renaming was organized as a tribute to Ronaldo’s achievements in football and his role in helping Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016, the country’s first major international football trophy. Regional authorities in Madeira approved the change as a way to recognize one of the island’s most internationally recognized figures. Ronaldo was born in Funchal, Madeira, on 05/02/1985 and had frequently spoken about his strong connection to the island throughout his career.
During the ceremony, officials praised Ronaldo for bringing international visibility to Madeira through his sporting accomplishments. The event included speeches from regional and national leaders as well as the unveiling of a bronze bust of Ronaldo inside the airport terminal. The sculpture quickly attracted widespread media attention and online discussion because of its unusual appearance, becoming a viral topic on social media and international news platforms shortly after the ceremony.
Ronaldo expressed gratitude during the event and described the honor as a source of pride for both himself and his family. The airport renaming became one of the most visible public tributes ever granted to a Portuguese athlete while still actively competing at the highest level of professional sport.
The timing of the tribute reflected Ronaldo’s standing in Portugal following the success of Euro 2016. As captain, he had led Portugal to victory in the tournament held in France the previous year, defeating the host nation 1–0 after extra time in the final. Although Ronaldo was forced off injured during the final itself, his leadership throughout the competition played a major role in Portugal’s achievement.
Madeira already maintained a strong public association with Ronaldo before the airport renaming. The island had previously established the Museu CR7 in Funchal, a museum dedicated to his career achievements, trophies, and memorabilia. The airport tribute further strengthened Ronaldo’s symbolic importance to Madeira’s identity and tourism profile.
The renaming also reflected how Ronaldo had become one of Portugal’s most globally recognized public figures beyond football itself. By 2017, he had won multiple Ballon d'Or awards, Champions League titles, and domestic league championships while building a worldwide commercial and cultural presence.
