On 15/05/2004, Cristiano Ronaldo experienced a dramatic match for Manchester United during a 2–0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. The final-day fixture of the 2003–04 English league season saw the young Portuguese winger score early before later receiving the first red card of his professional club career.
Ronaldo gave Manchester United the lead in the fourth minute with a low right-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area. The shot beat Aston Villa goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen at his near post and demonstrated the attacking confidence Ronaldo had begun showing during his first season in English football after joining from Sporting CP in 2003.
The goal helped Manchester United establish control of the match, with the team eventually securing a 2–0 victory. Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy added the second goal for United later in the game, ensuring a positive conclusion to the Premier League campaign for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Despite the strong performance, the match also included one of the earliest disciplinary incidents of Ronaldo’s senior career. Referee Rob Styles sent Ronaldo off in the 85th minute after issuing him a second yellow card. His first booking had arrived in the 38th minute for simulation after an incident in the penalty area that the referee judged to be a dive.
The second yellow card came late in the match when Ronaldo kicked the ball away after being flagged offside. Some reports described the action as time-wasting, while others noted that he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper moments after the whistle had already been blown. Regardless of the interpretation, the referee issued a second caution, resulting in Ronaldo’s dismissal.
The sending-off highlighted the emotional and sometimes impulsive side of Ronaldo’s game during his teenage years in England. At just 19 years old, he was still adapting to the physicality, tactical discipline, and refereeing standards of the Premier League. Early in his Manchester United career, he frequently attracted criticism from opposing supporters and pundits for perceived diving and excessive showmanship, although his technical ability and attacking flair were already widely recognized.
The 2003–04 season represented Ronaldo’s first year under Sir Alex Ferguson after his transfer from Sporting CP. While still developing consistency, he had already become one of the most exciting young talents in English football due to his pace, dribbling, and creativity. Manchester United supporters increasingly viewed him as a future star capable of becoming central to the club’s long-term success.
Over the following years, Ronaldo matured significantly both tactically and emotionally. He transformed from an unpredictable young winger into one of the most productive attacking players in football history, eventually winning the Ballon d'Or, UEFA Champions League, and multiple league titles with Manchester United and later Real Madrid.
The Aston Villa match therefore became one of the memorable early episodes in Ronaldo’s development, combining the brilliance and rawness that characterized the beginning of his rise to global stardom.
