On 09/08/2016, Cristiano Ronaldo launched the mobile application “CR7Selfie: Fans with a Cause,” a charity-focused project created to support the humanitarian organization Save the Children
. Ronaldo had served as a global ambassador for the organization since 2013, and the app was designed to combine fan interaction with fundraising for child hunger, health, and emergency relief programs.
The application allowed users to create virtual selfies with Ronaldo using a variety of digitally inserted poses and outfits. Fans could place Ronaldo into photos taken with their smartphone cameras and adjust the image positioning and size to create realistic composite pictures. The app included more than 68 different Ronaldo images and scenarios, ranging from formal suits and football celebrations to casual poses and humorous karaoke-themed images. Some options also featured Ronaldo alongside his European Golden Boot trophies.
“CR7Selfie” was released for mobile devices at a launch price of approximately $1.99 or £1.49, depending on region. A portion of the proceeds from app downloads and in-app purchases was directed toward Save the Children’s humanitarian programs worldwide. Promotional campaigns surrounding the launch encouraged supporters to share their edited photos online using the hashtag #CR7SelfieApp in order to raise awareness for global child welfare initiatives.
The release came only weeks after Ronaldo captained Portugal to victory at UEFA Euro 2016, the nation’s first major international football title. At the time, Ronaldo was among the most followed athletes on social media globally, and the app was viewed as part of a broader trend of athletes using digital platforms and personal branding to support charitable campaigns and direct fundraising efforts.
Save the Children publicly highlighted Ronaldo’s popularity and international influence as valuable tools for increasing visibility around issues affecting vulnerable children. Throughout the 2010s, Ronaldo participated in several charity campaigns involving hospitals, disaster relief efforts, medical fundraising, and children’s organizations. His ambassador role with Save the Children included appearances in awareness campaigns focused on nutrition, education, and humanitarian crises.
The app also reflected the growing relationship between celebrity culture and mobile technology during the mid-2010s, when interactive apps featuring athletes and entertainers became increasingly common. By linking entertainment features with charitable donations, the project attempted to transform Ronaldo’s large online following into direct fundraising support.
Although primarily promotional and entertainment-focused, “CR7Selfie: Fans with a Cause” became part of Ronaldo’s wider public image as both a football icon and philanthropic ambassador during the peak years of his career at Real Madrid.
