On 12/08/2003, Cristiano Ronaldo officially signed for Manchester United from Sporting CP for a transfer fee of approximately £12.24 million. At 18 years old, Ronaldo became the most expensive teenager in English football history at the time, marking the beginning of one of the most important player signings in modern football.
The transfer moved rapidly after Ronaldo’s standout performance against Manchester United in a pre-season friendly held in Lisbon on 06/08/2003. Sporting CP defeated United 3–1 at the Estádio José Alvalade, but much of the attention focused on Ronaldo’s dazzling display of pace, dribbling, and attacking flair. Reports later stated that several Manchester United players urged manager Sir Alex Ferguson during the return journey to England to sign the young Portuguese winger immediately before another club could intervene.
Sir Alex Ferguson acted quickly to complete the transfer, identifying Ronaldo as one of Europe’s most promising talents. Manchester United secured the deal only days later, bringing Ronaldo to Old Trafford on a five-year contract.
One of the most memorable details surrounding the signing involved Ronaldo’s shirt number. Having worn number 28 at Sporting CP, Ronaldo reportedly requested the same number at Manchester United to avoid the pressure associated with the club’s famous number 7 jersey. Ferguson, however, insisted that he inherit the number previously worn by club legends including George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and most recently David Beckham, who had transferred to Real Madrid earlier that summer.
The decision initially made Ronaldo nervous because of the weight of expectation attached to the number. Nevertheless, the “CR7” identity would later become one of the most recognizable brands in world sport.
Ronaldo made his Manchester United debut only four days after signing, entering as a substitute against Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford on 16/08/2003. His performance electrified the crowd, with supporters immediately responding to his confidence, dribbling ability, and attacking creativity. The debut is still widely regarded as one of the most exciting first appearances by a player in Premier League history.
At the time of the transfer, Ronaldo was viewed as a highly talented but still developing winger. Over the following six years under Ferguson’s management, he evolved into one of the world’s greatest players. During his Manchester United career, Ronaldo won three consecutive Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the 2008 Ballon d'Or before moving to Real Madrid in 2009 for a then world-record fee.
The 2003 transfer ultimately became one of the most successful signings in Manchester United history and one of the defining moments of Ronaldo’s rise to global superstardom.
