In June 2017, Cristiano Ronaldo captained Portugal during the nation’s first and only appearance at the FIFA Confederations Cup, held in Russia. Portugal entered the tournament as the reigning UEFA European champions following their victory at Euro 2016, and they ultimately finished in third place after progressing through the group stage and reaching the semi-finals.
Portugal were drawn into Group A alongside hosts Russia, Mexico, and New Zealand. Ronaldo played a central role in helping Portugal finish at the top of the group. He scored his first goal of the tournament on 21/06/2017 during a 1–0 victory over Russia in Moscow, heading home in the eighth minute from a cross delivered by Raphaël Guerreiro. The goal secured an important win against the tournament hosts and strengthened Portugal’s position in the standings.
Ronaldo added a second goal on 24/06/2017 in Portugal’s 4–0 victory against New Zealand. He converted a penalty in the 33rd minute after being fouled inside the penalty area. In addition to his goals, Ronaldo also contributed an assist during the group stage as Portugal advanced to the knockout rounds unbeaten.
The semi-final against Chile took place on 28/06/2017 in Kazan and ended in a 0–0 draw after extra time. Portugal were then eliminated after losing 3–0 in the penalty shootout, with Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo saving all three Portuguese penalties. Ronaldo did not take a penalty in the shootout because Portugal’s scheduled order did not reach his turn before the contest was decided.
Following the semi-final defeat, Ronaldo left the tournament before Portugal’s third-place playoff match. The Portuguese Football Federation announced that he had been released from the squad to return to his family after the birth of his twins, Eva and Mateo, via surrogacy. Portugal went on to defeat Mexico 2–1 after extra time in the third-place match without him.
Ronaldo appeared in four of Portugal’s five matches during the competition and remained one of the tournament’s most visible players. The Confederations Cup also served as a preparatory event for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, giving Portugal experience competing in Russia one year before the World Cup tournament itself.
Although Portugal did not reach the final, their third-place finish represented a respectable performance in their only Confederations Cup appearance before FIFA later discontinued the tournament after the 2017 edition. Ronaldo’s contributions during the event further strengthened his international record as Portugal’s leading scorer and captain.
