Research In Motion (RIM) released the BlackBerry 850 pager in 1999, introducing the first device to carry the BlackBerry name. The handheld wireless pager was designed primarily for mobile email communication and became one of the company’s earliest commercially successful products. Its launch marked the beginning of the BlackBerry product line that later became widely used in business, government, and professional communication around the world.
The BlackBerry 850 operated on the DataTAC wireless network and featured a compact monochrome screen with a thumb-operated QWERTY keyboard positioned below the display. The device allowed users to send and receive email messages in near real time, a capability that was still relatively uncommon in handheld consumer technology during the late 1990s. The pager also supported organizer functions such as contacts, calendar management, and basic task tracking.
The name “BlackBerry” was reportedly chosen because the keyboard’s small rounded keys resembled the drupelets of a blackberry fruit. Lexicon Branding, a California-based naming firm, assisted in creating the product name. The BlackBerry 850 was introduced at a time when mobile professionals increasingly sought portable access to corporate email systems outside traditional office environments.
RIM developed the device as part of its broader effort to expand wireless data communication products during the 1990s. Earlier products such as the Inter@ctive Pager series and the RIM 950 two-way pager had already explored keyboard-based mobile messaging, but the BlackBerry 850 refined these ideas into a dedicated mobile email platform. The product gained attention for its secure messaging capabilities and efficient keyboard input, features that later became central to BlackBerry’s reputation.
The release of the BlackBerry 850 helped establish RIM as a major participant in the mobile communications industry before the rise of touchscreen smartphones. Over the following decade, BlackBerry devices became widely adopted by corporate users, government agencies, and political leaders because of their wireless email and security features.
