BlackBerry acquired U.K. based mobile technology startup Movirtu in September 2014 as part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its enterprise mobility and secure communications business. The acquisition was announced on 11/09/2014, during a period when BlackBerry was shifting its focus away from declining smartphone hardware sales toward software and enterprise services.
Movirtu specialized in virtual SIM and multiple identity mobile technology that allowed users to separate personal and work phone numbers on a single device. The company’s platform enabled enterprises and mobile operators to manage multiple mobile identities without requiring separate physical SIM cards or devices. The technology was viewed as particularly useful for businesses adopting bring your own device, or BYOD, workplace policies.
BlackBerry stated that Movirtu’s technology would enhance its enterprise mobility management platform and support secure mobile communication services across different operating systems, including Android and iPhone devices. The acquisition aligned with BlackBerry’s broader effort to position itself as a provider of enterprise software and secure mobile infrastructure rather than solely a smartphone manufacturer.
At the time of the acquisition, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen was overseeing a restructuring strategy aimed at stabilizing the company’s finances and expanding software related revenue. BlackBerry said Movirtu’s capabilities would support regulated industries and enterprise customers that required stronger separation between personal and corporate communications.
Movirtu had previously worked with several mobile operators and enterprise clients in Europe and other international markets. Financial terms of the acquisition were not publicly disclosed. Following the deal, BlackBerry integrated Movirtu’s technology into its enterprise software portfolio as it expanded secure mobility services for business users.
The acquisition formed part of a larger series of software and security investments made by BlackBerry during the mid 2010s, alongside acquisitions focused on cybersecurity, secure messaging, and enterprise device management.
Editorial Note
The Movirtu acquisition reflected BlackBerry’s early recognition that enterprise mobility was shifting beyond company issued smartphones. By investing in software that supported multiple operating systems and flexible work environments, BlackBerry adapted its business toward enterprise services in a rapidly changing mobile industry.
