Research In Motion (RIM), the Canadian technology company known for its BlackBerry smartphones and wireless communication products, officially changed its corporate name to BlackBerry Limited on 30/01/2013. The announcement was made during the company’s launch event for the BlackBerry 10 operating system and new BlackBerry smartphones in multiple international locations including New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Dubai, and Johannesburg.
The corporate rebranding reflected the fact that “BlackBerry” had become the company’s most recognized global brand over more than a decade of mobile communication products. Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins stated during the launch presentation that customers around the world already identified the company primarily with the BlackBerry name. The legal and corporate transition from Research In Motion Limited to BlackBerry Limited was completed the same day.
The name change coincided with the introduction of BlackBerry 10, a new operating system designed to compete with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms. Alongside the software launch, the company introduced the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, its first full touchscreen BlackBerry 10 device. RIM had spent several years restructuring its business and rebuilding its smartphone platform after losing market share during the rapid expansion of iPhone and Android devices in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Research In Motion had originally been founded in Waterloo, Ontario, in 1984 by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin. The company became internationally recognized during the 2000s for secure mobile email devices and physical-keyboard smartphones widely used in business and government sectors. By officially adopting the BlackBerry name, the company aligned its corporate identity with the product brand that had defined its public image for years.
The transition marked one of the most visible rebranding efforts in the company’s history as it attempted to reposition itself within a highly competitive mobile technology industry. Although BlackBerry later shifted more heavily toward cybersecurity software and enterprise services, the 2013 renaming formally ended nearly three decades of operation under the Research In Motion name.
