Nidahase Piya DS (2018) is a grand Sri Lankan biographical drama directed by Suneth Malinga Lokuhewa. The film explores the life and legacy of D. S. Senanayake, Sri Lanka's first prime minister, widely honored as the "Father of the Nation." Lakshman Mendis takes on the role of the mature Senanayake, while Thumindu Dodantenna plays his younger self. Together with an impressive ensemble cast that includes Saranga Disasekara as S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike and Udith Abeyrathna as J. R. Jayewardene, the film paints a layered portrait of the man, the leader, and the nation-former.
Spanning the path to independence, the narrative follows Senanayake’s formative years, his political awakening, and efforts to unite a divided island. Key moments are captured: his early family life, formative moments in politics, diplomatic exchanges with colonial governors, and bold initiatives to build agricultural colonies, foster economic self-reliance, and initiate social reforms. Scenes filmed across historical sites like Ranminitenna cinema village, Kandy, and Peradeniya enhance the period realism.
The production is ambitious—reportedly made on a budget of around 100 million Sri Lankan rupees—and was premiered on the 70th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence. Visually rich, the film integrates stirring music by Samantha Perera and tightly edited political drama. It was screened domestically in major circuits like Ridma, and later showcased to Sri Lankan communities abroad in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
Nidahase Piya DS generated significant attention and acclaim locally. It earned awards including Best Supporting Actor and recognition for sound design at Sri Lanka’s Presidential Film Awards. The portrayal of historical figures resonated with nationalist sentiment, though some viewers noted its idealization of Senanayake and simplified treatment of political nuance. Still, it remains an important cinematic tribute: ambitious in scope, heartfelt in its intent, and influential in shaping public memory of Sri Lanka’s journey to independence.
