On 01/11/2019, Terminator: Dark Fate was released in the United States, marking Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the franchise as the T-800, later known as “Carl.” The film served as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and disregarded the continuity of the intervening sequels. Directed by Tim Miller and produced by James Cameron, the film reunited Schwarzenegger with Linda Hamilton, who returned to her role as Sarah Connor for the first time in nearly three decades.
Schwarzenegger’s character was portrayed as an aging T-800 unit that had completed its original mission and subsequently developed a conscience. Living under the name Carl, the character had integrated into human society in Texas, operating a drapery business and maintaining a quiet domestic life. The narrative presented the machine as evolving beyond its programming, with Carl eventually assisting Sarah Connor and new allies in confronting a modern threat.
Set roughly 25 years after the events of Terminator 2, the story followed an augmented human soldier named Grace, played by Mackenzie Davis, who travels back in time to protect Dani Ramos, portrayed by Natalia Reyes. They are pursued by a new advanced Terminator model known as the Rev-9. Sarah Connor joins the effort, and the group later seeks help from Carl, whose experience and capabilities become central to the mission. The film emphasized legacy characters alongside new protagonists while continuing the franchise’s themes of artificial intelligence and human survival.
