In 1997, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as the primary antagonist Dr. Victor Fries, also known as Mr. Freeze, in the superhero film Batman & Robin. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the movie was released in the United States on 20/06/1997 and was the fourth installment in the Warner Bros. Batman film series that began with Batman in 1989. Schwarzenegger’s character is introduced as a cryogenics scientist who turns to crime after an accident leaves him dependent on subzero temperatures to survive while he searches for a cure for his terminally ill wife, Nora Fries.
The film featured George Clooney as Bruce Wayne and Batman, Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of Mr. Freeze included numerous ice themed one liners and a costume designed with illuminated armor to reflect the character’s cold based technology. Production emphasized stylized sets, large scale props, and practical effects, with Mr. Freeze using freezing devices, cryogenic weapons, and themed vehicles throughout the story.
Batman & Robin premiered in June 1997 and grossed more than $238 million worldwide. Schwarzenegger’s casting was widely publicized before release, and he reportedly received one of the highest acting salaries of the period for the role. The character served as the central antagonist, driving the plot through attempts to freeze Gotham City and finance research to save his wife.
