On 21/12/1990, the action comedy film Kindergarten Cop, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released in North American theaters. Directed by Ivan Reitman, the movie cast Schwarzenegger as Detective John Kimble, a police officer assigned to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher in order to locate the ex wife and son of a dangerous drug dealer. The film marked another collaboration between Schwarzenegger and Reitman following their earlier success with Twins in 1988. The story follows Kimble as he takes over a kindergarten class in Astoria, Oregon, while searching for the family connected to the suspect. The film blended action elements with comedy derived from Kimble’s unfamiliarity with young children and classroom dynamics. The cast included Penelope Ann Miller as Joyce Palmieri, Pamela Reed as Detective Phoebe O’Hara, and Richard Tyson as the antagonist Cullen Crisp. Much of the film was shot on location in Oregon, including scenes filmed at John Jacob Astor Elementary School in Astoria. Kindergarten Cop opened during the holiday release period in December 1990 and performed strongly at the box office, earning more than $200 million worldwide. The role represented a continuation of Schwarzenegger’s move into family oriented comedy while maintaining his action film presence. The film later became known for widely quoted lines and recurring television broadcasts.
