On 10/04/2000, Apple Inc. announced the acquisition of Astarte GmbH, a Germany based developer of DVD authoring software. Astarte was known for its professional DVD creation application DVDirector, which allowed users to assemble video content, design menus, and prepare discs for DVD production. Apple confirmed that it had acquired Astarte’s technology, products, and engineering team as part of a broader strategy to expand into digital video creation and DVD publishing tools for both professionals and consumers. Following the acquisition, Apple integrated Astarte’s technology into its developing video software lineup. The professional grade DVD Studio Pro, introduced later in 2001, was based on DVDirector and provided advanced DVD authoring features including menu design, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and navigation control. Apple also developed iDVD, a simplified consumer oriented application that enabled users to create DVDs from home videos using guided templates. iDVD was released in 2001 alongside the Power Mac G4 with built in SuperDrive support. The acquisition complemented Apple’s earlier move into digital video editing through Final Cut Pro, which had been introduced in 1999. Together, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and iDVD formed an integrated workflow for editing, authoring, and distributing video content on DVD. Apple positioned this software lineup as part of its broader push into desktop video production, combining hardware such as the Power Mac G4 and SuperDrive with software tools for end to end content creation.
