As of 2021, Apple Inc. reported using components sourced from 43 countries as part of its global supply chain. These components were produced by a wide range of suppliers providing semiconductors, displays, sensors, enclosures, and other hardware elements used in Apple products. Final assembly of many devices was primarily handled by Taiwanese original design manufacturer firms including Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron, and Compal Electronics. Their manufacturing facilities were largely located in mainland China, with additional assembly operations in countries such as Brazil and India.
Apple’s outsourcing model attracted criticism over labor conditions at some supplier facilities. Reports over the years cited long working hours, production pressure during major product launches, and workplace safety concerns. In response, Apple expanded its Supplier Responsibility program, which includes audits, labor standards enforcement, and corrective action requirements for suppliers. The program also established guidelines related to working hours, compensation, safety practices, and environmental performance. Apple published annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Reports outlining audit results and compliance improvements across participating suppliers.
Apple also pursued diversification within its manufacturing network. The company increased production capacity in India and maintained assembly operations in Brazil, while continuing to source components globally. The distributed supply chain also contributed to periodic product leaks, which often originated from manufacturing partners and component suppliers rather than Apple’s corporate offices. These incidents led Apple to strengthen confidentiality requirements and security measures across supplier facilities.
