In December 2021, Apple Inc. officially launched Communication Safety in Messages as part of the iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2, and macOS Monterey 12.1 updates. The feature, first announced in August 2021, was designed to help protect children from viewing or sharing sexually explicit images. Apple implemented the system using on device machine learning that analyzes image attachments locally on the user’s device. Because the analysis occurs on device, Apple stated that it does not receive access to message content, and end to end encryption in Messages remains unchanged.
Communication Safety applies to child accounts within Family Sharing. When an incoming image containing nudity is detected, the photo is automatically blurred and a warning message appears explaining that the image may contain sensitive content. The child is presented with options including viewing safety resources or contacting a trusted adult. Apple also implemented similar protections for outgoing images. If a child attempts to send a photo identified as containing nudity, the system displays a warning encouraging them not to send the image and offering access to help resources.
Apple emphasized that the feature does not notify parents automatically for older children unless the child chooses to contact a trusted adult, and that no information about detected images is sent to Apple. The release followed public discussion of Apple’s earlier child safety initiatives announced in August 2021. Communication Safety in Messages became available globally with the December 2021 software updates for supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.
